Do we get what we don't deserve?

People often think that we are essentially deserving and that God simply gives us what we have earned. As a result it is felt that God has failed us when life's pains come to our door.
The Bible sees things differently. It says that we are essentially undeserving and that God gives us many good things that we have done nothing to earn. As a result we still have reason to marvel at his kindness, even when life's pains come to our door.

Jonathan Edwards wrote, "How far less [are] the greatest afflictions that we meet with in this world . . . than we have deserved!"
