Why do we make democratic decisions?

Here's a thought: 'Democracy: why do we make democratic decisions?'

After all it was the crowd that complained against Moses in the wilderness, it was a democratic decision not to enter the promised land when the twelve spies returned, it was a democratic decision the crowd made to release Barabbas and have Jesus crucified and it was not by democracy that the early church chose a successor to Judas. So why do we think that we should make decisions as to who would be leaders in our church by a democratic vote?

Wesley wasn't too keen on democracy, but then he was a high church tory... But if you look carefully at the way leadership in our own denomination is supposed to be elected (at least at the local level) it is NOT by a fully democratic system... Those voting are only allowed to vote on those nominated by the minister after consultation with an advisory group. Hence, all those nominated by the minister should have the necessary gifts and graces for leadership (not representation) and the vote is only a selection procedure...
