In our culture people hear the words ‘God loves you’ and take it for granted. It is as if they are thinking: ‘of course! Why wouldn’t he love me? Sure aren’t I very loveable!’ But people who understand the nature of sin ought to be astounded at the thought that God loves us. ‘He loves us despite the fact that we turned our backs on him! He loves us even though we have done many evil things! He loves us even though we have provided him with so many reasons not to love us!’
