In a session at Re:call we were asked a question relating to what we bring to ministry. The thing that struck me is how our vulnerabilities and weaknesses can actually be an asset in identifying with people. I call these positive negatives!
I know what it is to suffer a mental illness, which has helped in identifying with those who struggle with depression and anxiety. I have experienced being in the slow stream in school and not getting the grade that I aimed for in college. I am not good at sports (particularly football, which I enjoy). Each of these, and the many other weaknesses I have, can be used to model vulnerability and help to point people to what really matters in life.
What positive negatives have you? What weaknesses and failures do you have that God can use to help you identify with certain people? In what areas does your lack of success enable you to say 'you know I'd love to be good at that but it actually doesn't matter'? God doesn't simply want to use our strengths he also has a purpose for our weaknesses!
