There are many fine Christians who will disagree with my arguments regarding Genesis 1. In particular there are those who argue for a literal six days of creation. I have not written to hurt or belittle them, even if I do not share their opinion. I myself am no scientist and have a limited grasp of the issues involved in figuring out types of litrature. I may well be wrong. I am sure that God is capable of creating the universe in 144 hours - although I don't think that Genesis 1 demands it.
In his book The Message of Creation David Wilkinson (while not agreeing with their position)suggests that we should not simply dismiss those who hold a six-day creation position. He writes:
It is an approach that should not be underestimated either in its force or intellectual credibility. There is a tendancy amongst scientists and theologians to ascribe it to a small group of fundamentalists who refuse to use their minds. This is not the case. The influential American Institute for Creation Research and the smaller but growing British Creation Resources Trust have a number of powerful scientists among their numbers.

You do NOT have to be a scientist. God has made His word extremely clear - it is on the individual to trust it or tamper with it. There is no way possible to get Billions and Billions of year from Genesis, Exodus - Revelation. It is just not there. Science NEVER trumps scripture and are modern "scientific" ideas always change. as a man you tell us what God was trying to communicate to us when He wrote down with His finger "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Exodus 20:11. God tells us what He created on each day, and uses "morning and evening" after each day of creation. And tells us this is for us to observe as a pattern for our work week. The bible makes NO sense when you add Billions to God's "six". 70% of our modern dating methods also point to a young universe. Genetics points to a young genome. Mt. St. Helens shows us the results of catastrophe. -Let God be true and every man a liar! - Trust and obey!
